You can get your workplace ready to go smoke-free by following these tips:
  • Inform employees about the requirements for workplaces to be smoke-free on May 31, 2006.
  • Call your local Public Health Unit to see if your workplace meets the requirements of the law. Call to request a consultation to assist your workplace in the development of internal policies.
  • Call your local Public Health Unit to get resources and information for your employees about quitting.
  • Promote and provide smoking cessation resources for employees.
  • Post "no smoking" signs around the workplace.
  • Determine where smoking will be allowed outdoors.
  • Provide an ashtray far away from entrances so smoke doesn’t drift into the building.
  • Prepare a monitoring and workplace policy to deal with employees and others who don’t comply with the law.
  • Post a countdown that is visible to all employees, e.g., “7 more working days until going smoke-free” or post the smoke-free day date.
  • May 31, 2006 GO SMOKE-FREE!
  • Monitor and evaluate to ensure that employees are keeping the workplace smoke-free.
